Organizations have invested heavily in understanding how their workplaces are used. Yet one question remains surprisingly difficult to answer accurately: How many sensors do you really need to understand an office?<\/strong> <\/p>

At first glance, equipping every workstation with its own occupancy sensor appears logical. If every desk is monitored individually, surely the data must be more precise. <\/p>

In reality, office optimization is not simply a data collection problem. It is an operations, maintenance, scalability, and lifecycle management challenge<\/strong>. <\/p>

As organizations move from pilot projects to large-scale deployments, many discover that measuring every desk individually creates operational complexity that often outweighs the additional granularity<\/strong>. Instead, a new generation of ceiling-mounted multi-zone occupancy sensors is enabling organizations to obtain reliable occupancy insights while dramatically reducing infrastructure requirements. This aligns with broader smart-building principles where occupancy becomes an infrastructure layer rather than thousands of isolated sensing points. <\/p>

Two Different Approaches<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

There are fundamentally two philosophies for workplace occupancy monitoring.<\/p>

Approach 1: Desk Sensors<\/strong>A sensor is installed underneath (or attached to) every individual workstation.<\/p>

The system determines whether each desk is occupied.<\/p>

This approach provides information at the workstation level but requires a proportional increase in hardware as office size grows.<\/p>

Approach 2: Multi-Zone Ceiling Sensors<\/strong><\/p>

Instead of monitoring every desk independently, ceiling-mounted sensors observe an entire area simultaneously.<\/span><\/p>

One device can monitor multiple workstations by dividing its field of view into configurable occupancy zones. This way, we can access information on each individual desk occupancy in addition to information about the area. <\/span><\/p>

Rather than producing only isolated desk signals, the system provides in parallel a complete picture of how a workspace is actually being used.<\/span><\/p>

The purchase price of a sensor is only one component of the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).<\/p>

With desk-based sensing, increasing the size of an office means increasing the number of sensing devices almost proportionally. A deployment covering hundreds or thousands of desks therefore also means more: <\/span><\/p>
