These kinds of security risks are nothing new when it comes to protecting precious and valuable objects. And that’s why one of Terabee’s customers asked us for help. Could we harness our technology and expertise to develop a brand new security application that would trigger an alarm should someone try to grab an object – whether in a museum, exhibition area or anywhere else?
DESIGN CHALLENGES OF A HAND-INTRUSION ALARM SYSTEM
A hand-intrusion alarm system was required that needed to be small, discreet, easy to install and affordable at under €1000. It needed to be simpler than light curtains, commonly used in industrial applications, which require reflectors or a combination of emitters and receptors. It also needed to be flexible and – unlike light curtains – able to accommodate different detection area shapes: squares, circles or custom shapes, in order to follow the relevant object’s contours.
DEMONSTRATING THE CONCEPT WITH TERARANGER MULTIFLEX SENSOR ARRAYS
At the heart of our demonstration solution was an array of 4 TeraRanger Multiflex sensing kits. Each kit comprises 8 sensors which use low-powered laser emitters and the Time of Flight (ToF) principle to create a flexible, lightweight sensing solution. These were integrated with an Iono Pi, a versatile, industrial grade microcomputer with the computing core of the Raspberry Pi. Finally, a custom python script was developed to receive data from the sensor arrays and efficiently process them to trigger the alarm.
IMPRESSIVE RESULTS WITH THE TERABEE SYSTEM
The results proved impressive. The Terabee system was able to detect any object entering its field of view and trigger the alarm as soon as a specific threshold was met. To be fully operational, the system requires a flat ceiling (or a similar surface such as a lid) to be present within a 2m range of the sensors. And the shorter the range, the better the performance. A design that will ensure even the most adept thief is caught red-handed.
INNOVATIVE, MODULAR AND EASY TO USE
Terabee’s security system is able to carry out impressive hand-intrusion detection at a similar or lower cost than other offerings on the market. And uniquely, it’s able to adapt to different object shapes, ensuring a far wider scope for potential usage. The Terabee system is completely modular and can be scaled-up to provide hand-intrusion detection for objects much greater in size.
Installation is simpler than with existing systems. Using a PC and our proprietary algorithm, you power it up, position the Terabee Multiflex sensor arrays discreetly where they’re needed and then place the relevant object to be secured in the middle of the monitored area.
