Room occupancy monitoring via occupancy counters

The number of users of a room or space at any given time is a critical source of information for use in a smart building. This information can allow systems to manage lighting, heating and other utilities. During the COVID-19 pandemic, room occupancy monitoring has also been critical for adhering to social distancing practices.

Terabee People Counting L-XL Device

The People Counting L-XL Device from Terabee is a device which can reduce costs and optimize value from smart buildings, retail operations and office spaces. This device is a means of room occupancy monitoring that uses advanced Time-of-Flight technology whilst remaining GDPR compliant. When positioned in a doorway, this room occupancy counter device can keep track of the people passing in both directions through the door as they leave or enter a space.

The Time-of-Flight technology is able to sense distances between users, gathering non-intrusive depth image data without capturing personal identity. The camera does not need any specific light levels for optimal performance, meaning room occupancy monitoring can be carried out in both light and dark conditions.

Room occupancy monitoring and people traffic can be carried out by placing a occupancy counting device in a doorway. This will offer both historical and real-time data regarding a room’s usage pattern and the managers of the device can keep track of when the room is full, empty, over capacity or under capacity. Sensors are a critical part of the room occupancy monitoring and data collection of a smart building and can inform specific decisions about where the resources should be allocated.

The importance of Time-of-Flight technology for room occupancy monitoring

Using Time-of-Flight technology means that data can be accumulated over time and room occupancy can be optimized for future usage.  Terabee have also pioneered a people-counting algorithm which is able to generate 98% accuracy or more. The benefits of this are multifaceted, providing immediate and ongoing returns on investment (ROIs) from the perspective of smoother business operations and clarity of planning.

Users can deploy our room occupancy monitoring hardware to drive internal management decisions that enable them to extract the maximum value from a given space. Meeting rooms, for example, can be managed clearly and efficiently, with occupancy counting data supplementing booking systems. Additionally, occupancy counting data can support routine cleaning initiatives and predictive cleaning in the likes of washrooms, supporting the ongoing effort to champion greater hygiene and customer service standards in commercial environments.

Evo People Counter

The Evo People Counter from Terabee is small, compact and easy to integrate and monitors people traffic going in both directions. It is a low-cost sensor to integrate into a wider room occupancy monitoring system. The device is well-suited for integration with door frames as well as furniture and kiosks and reports data locally using USB or UART.

The Evo People Counter works well for room occupancy monitoring as it can ascertain which doorways have been used, where the most footfall occurs and the direction that users are travelling in. This device has been adapted to cover single standard door widths.
